Sitting at the drive-in window of Starbuck's in Barboursville, I listen to a NPR segment of StoryCorps. Featured this morning was Danny and Annie Perasa who first told their story a year or so ago. Danny, it seems, has continued to record stories expressing his love for his beloved wife, Annie. I start to cry as I listen to this morning's story.
Danny has cancer. StoryCorps went to him a few weeks ago to record yet another story, but this time it is the story of his death and how love transports these two people through the days and hours that take Danny closer to the end of his life.
I cry easily - always have and most likely always will. But, my tears this morning are not exhausting, nor are they painful. They are sweet tears, the kind of tears that come from the most real place inside of me - that place where I am the most me and everything that entails. I knew they were coming because I had turned my head to look out the car window so I wouldn't be be "caught," but the burning of my eyes quickly gave way to a steady flow of tears that seemed to just fall out of my eyes as if pulled out by gravitational forces. There was nothing I could do to stop them so I took a deep breath and began wiping the rivers from my cheeks with a Starbuck's napkin.
But, my crying is not all because Danny is dying. My crying is because Danny is a poet and his poetry is beautiful.
